This is the part of teaching phonics
that no one really talks about.
If teaching phonics feels confusing, if you’re second-guessing yourself, if you’re wondering whether you’re doing enough β I want you to know this gently: many mums start exactly where you are.
It’s not just the sounds. It’s not just blending.
It’s the quiet worry in your chest when you open a book and pause. When you scan the page firstβ¦ before reading it out loud. When you’re hoping your child doesn’t ask a question you’re not ready to explain.
Because when most people say “teach your child phonics”, it often comes with:
- Filtering through pages to remove haram content
- Skipping stories that don’t reflect your values
- Explaining things your child didn’t need to be exposed to
- Watching your child feel out of place in books not made for them
- Feeling alone in trying to protect their deen while teaching them properly
Ukhti⦠I see you.
And this is exactly why I don’t teach phonics the normal way.
I’m thinking of one mum in particular. Let’s call her Amina.
When Amina first reached out, she was trying so hard. She had good intentions. She had books people recommended. She had watched videos and downloaded worksheets. But her child was still only recognising letters β not blending, not reading.
And that left her feeling tired, unsure, and quietly worried. Every lesson felt heavier than it needed to be.
What changed for her wasn’t effort β it was structure.
When she began using the How To Teach My Ummah Phonics Workbook, something softened. She finally had:
- a clear order to follow
- simple guidance that didn’t assume she was a teacher
- lessons that felt safe and aligned with her values
Slowly, calmly, her daughter began to blend words. Reading started to feel peaceful instead of stressful. And Amina felt reassured β I’m doing this right.
That’s the kind of result that matters to me. Not pressure. Not rushing. But steady progress with confidence. And I see this again and again.
“My daughter was so happy to see children in the book who looked like her. She picked it up and started reading β without me even asking.”
β Umm Umaymah“I love how there is consistent Islamic representation throughout the book. This is wonderful for tarbiyyah.”
β Ukhti KawtharI created this because Muslim children deserve to feel safe, seen, and loved while they learn. Instead of asking our children to relate to characters and stories that erase them, I created a phonics workbook where Muslim children feel they belong.
Where they see themselves. Where their deen isn’t edited out. Where learning doesn’t come with confusion or discomfort.
And for you, ukhti? It’s simple. It’s step-by-step. It doesn’t assume you’re a teacher. And it never asks you to compromise your values.
